On 26 September 2023, in the serene setting of the Japanese Garden of Peace at Hammersmith Park, Ambassador HAYASHI Hajime had the honor of presenting the Ambassador’s Commendation to Mr. John Gordon-Smith, in recognition of his outstanding service as the Former Chair of the Friends of the Japanese Garden at Hammersmith Park.
Since 2008, John has played a pivotal role in the preservation and enhancement of the Japanese Garden, significantly contributing to the local community's engagement and appreciation of this cultural treasure. His leadership in founding our volunteer group, the Friends of the Japanese Garden of Peace at Hammersmith Park, has been instrumental in fostering a sense of community ownership and pride. His efforts culminated in the memorable event commemorating the garden’s centennial, marking the 100th anniversary of the 1910 Anglo-Japanese Exhibition, an event that underscored the enduring bonds between the UK and Japan.
Ambassador Hayashi expressed profound gratitude to Mr. Gordon-Smith for his unwavering dedication and significant contributions, which have not only preserved the beauty and tranquility of the Japanese Garden but also enhanced cultural exchange and deepened the historic friendship between the UK and Japan. The Ambassador's heartfelt thanks were accompanied by a hopeful vision for the continued growth and flourishing of the Japanese Garden of Peace, a symbol of friendship and cultural harmony between the two nations.
Well done, John!
